Pre-conference Roundtable: Fresh Expressions Of Fitness

By Carey Sims, Fresh Expressions U.S.

LOCATION: Extended Stay America – Orlando – Convention Center – Sports Complex (LOBBY), 6451 Westwood Boulevard, Orlando, FL 32821. PHONE: 407-352-3454

Bringing the business of fitness together with Christian ministry is a conversation that runs throughout redefined – a faith and fitness conference. Blending the two together is the vision we champion. However, in practice there can be a lack of specifics on how to do it really well. This roundtable conversation facilitated by Fresh Expressions representative Carey Sims and Rev. Michael Beck will explore concepts outlined in the short e-book that you are encouraged to download, How To Start A New Kind Of Church.

Can discipleship ministry really be done in a fitness business? What do examples look like of ‘being a pastor’ among people who don’t go to church? Who should be part of my team to make this work? Bring all your questions and concerns.

Join fellow attendees for an early start to the conference. Be ready to forge ideas for innovation and be bolstered in your spirit with determination in purpose and shared passion.

Session 01: Redefine How You Do Fitness

By Brad Bloom, Publisher, Faith & Fitness Magazine

Changes in the fitness business are happening fast, which is why some of the most innovative and successful professionals are making faith central to what they do. Get started with an examination of how faith has played a historical role in fitness and ways it is most prominently shaping the industry today.

You’ll be introduced to key terms and leaders, rationale and ethos, red-flags and best practices all combined with reports, findings and commentary. This isn’t your typical linear presentation. You’re here for a reason – to ask questions, get ideas and build a strategy. Be ready to drive that agenda from the beginning through one incredibly productive session.

10:15 am - 10:45 am
Networking Break: Discover who is doing what.

This is one fast half hour to have business cards in hand and be ready to make this conference your own.

10:45 am - 11:45 am
Session 02: Making Mission Count – Keeping The Focus On Ultimate Outcomes

By Chad Garmon, Executive Director Christian Initiatives & Community Partnership, YMCA of Central Florida

Everyone knows that the “C” in YMCA stands for “Christian”. Most feel the Y has grown far away from that heritage and matured into a secular organization. The U.S. Mission Network however is helping leaders and staff within YMCA associations throughout the country discover incredible potential by making faith key to their mission. Chad shares the scope of services and support provided by this network and then presents exactly how that looks and impacts the thousands of members in the Central Florida association. He will then apply these universal concepts and practices to other fitness businesses so you can consider how faith can strengthen your mission.

11:45 am - 1:00 pm
LUNCH: (on your own)

A variety of restaurants are near the convention center. Remember! Your registration includes a specially prepared Farm-To-Fork Dinner at the Axum Market Cafe at 6pm (see description below).

1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Session 03: Deliver An Outrageous CX

You are capable of creating an amazing customer experience. The demand for fitness professionals to deliver a more dynamic and personal encounter every time is what is redefining fitness — for the better – a lot better! It’s not at all about what your client does it is always about who they are. We will examine key concepts that will transform how you think about your customers and your fitness service as a ministry.

2:15 pm - 3:15 pm
Session 04: Focus On Food To Grow Reputation And Community

Presented By: Nathan Ballentine, Man In Overalls

Diet impacts fitness results much more than exercise. While gyms across the country preach this truth most still focus almost entirely on the workout. Quit missing the opportunity to achieve growth. Focus on what is increasingly very important to your customers – better foods, locally sourced delivered as part of a healthy diet plan.

Nathan will take you from the garden, through coaching and education to meal prep, and ultimately helping your clients and members cultivate a healthy attitude toward food that they can truly celebrate.

3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Session 05: Create Strong Online Impact

Presented By: Brienne Christopher, Founder, PurposeFit

Brienne is part of a growing number of fitness entrepreneurs that realizes the importance of leveraging online. The marketplace landscape is changing fast. The brick-and-mortar-only business model doesn’t really exist anymore. The question you need to answer is, “How can I make ‘online’ work well for me?”

Brienne will share how to make your website effective, expand your services, gather and process data, grow customer interest and member interaction, increase revenue and ultimately do something you wouldn’t expect from the internet — strengthen the real one-on-one direct human interaction. She’ll share examples from her PurposeFit business and other businesses so you can get ideas to improve and build a strategy to increase impact.

4:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Session 06: Resources To Redefine Fitness

Presented By: Brad Bloom

Be ready to go shopping. We bring the store to you – but you only have a half hour. Compared to a decade ago there are now many faith-centered fitness resources.  They are entertaining, diverse, easy to use, solid in content, have effective outcomes and inspire spiritual growth. There really is no excuse to not increasingly offer faith-centered programming at your fitness business. Bring your AB Show bag because we might just load you up with a few goodies ready for you to get this going big time back in your community.

6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Farm-To-Fork Dinner: Axum Market Cafe

Now that we’ve talked about how food can grow reputation and community at your fitness business or church, it is time to see it AND TASTE IT.

A short distance from the convention center (7000 Dr. Phillips Bl, Orlando, FL) a special farm-to-fork dinner is served at the Axum Market Cafe.  This eatery is a beautiful example of how a local Christian-owned food business collaborates with a faith-focused fitness business. Husband and wife team Josh and Kelly Taylor, General Managers of the Axum Market Cafe are also the founders of Do Good Farm a local sustainable farm feeding neighbors and nations. The cafe is located at the Dr. Phillips YMCA.

Experience a place about helping those in need: locally, nationally and internationally. A place about giving instead of taking. A place where guests are not just numbers, but people with stories to tell. Axum Market Cafe was birthed from a passion to impact health and wellness. The 3 biggest excuses people typically give for not eating healthy are COST, CONVENIENCE, TASTE. Enjoy a specially prepared dinner that is an answer for all 3.

Choose either a vegetarian meal or a locally raised salmon meal. This dinner is the perfect way to transition into the evening at the Redefined Conference. Linger for good conversation and fellowship.

Guests are responsible for their own transportation.

Session 07: How Redefining Fitness Impacts Lives

Presented By: Troy Ismir

Start day two of the Redefined Conference early with stories that will inspire you to go home eager to impact lives. The potential is limitless. The effect is profound. This is what it’s all about.

Session 08: Fitness Retreats That Reboot And Reach Out

Presented By: Amy Sotis, Founder, Luminaries Fitness Retreats

Sure it has taken some effort to get to Orlando for the Redefined Conference and Athletic Business Show. For many it is one of the best fitness-focused highlights of the year. Most of your clients and members never get to experience anything like this.  The good news – After you take this session, you can change that for them and create a fitness retreat they’ll want every year.

Amy examines a variety of fitness retreat options, offers solid specifics and insights, shares her experiences from operating Luminaries Fitness Retreats and will work with you to move forward in organizing your fitness retreats.

11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Session 09: Beyond Inclusion – Create An Inviting And Belonging Community

Presented by: Josh and Heather Pennington, Co-directors at LIFT Disability Missouri .

Ever realize you are missing out on a large potential market for your fitness business? Or, that your church has NO people with disabilities that attend? Let’s choose to change that in our culture. The number of people in the United States living with a chronic health condition or disability is 26.4% or about 1 in 4 people.

We begin with a big view of all that inclusion can be. Then this session will give you practical tips on ways to broaden your membership as well as offer a much needed inclusive community for people to belong in order to be fit and experience hope, no matter what their ability level might be. Participants will be able to develop a philosophy and culture surrounding this topic, as well as learn many practical ways to modify and adapt that are inclusive, welcoming, and DO NOT break the budget.

Together as we learn we can increase business, impact lives, and make inclusion a culture that your members celebrate.

Session 10: Exercise Mind And Body With Bible-Themed Group Fitness

Presented by: Susan Neal,RN, MBA, MHS, Scripture Yoga

It’s been a busy day but you’re not finished. 4:30 is a good time for everyone to regain their center. Learn how Scripture Yoga™ can be an ideal programming solution for the early evening hours at your fitness business.

Experience what it’s like to meditate on Bible scriptures while holding a yoga pose. This is more than just hearing Bible passages – practice a deeper meditation where you are invited to respond to the very words of God. See how theme-based Bible verses (in this session we’ll focus on “God’s Gracious Word”) are recited during the class to bring Christian faith-centered yoga to a whole new level.

This is an invigorating way to meditate on sacred wisdom and encouraging exhortation while exercising your mind and body. Connect with God in a personal and powerful way in this physical and spiritual celebration.

Learn how the use of Biblical themes can be applied to many types of group fitness classes such as Tai Chi, Pilates, PiYo, Chair yoga, and stretching.
