Emotional Eating

Emotional eating is triggered by a need for comfort. The need for comfort may be misinterpreted as physical hunger when the real craving or appetite is for spiritual sustenance. The challenge is to discern the difference between physical hunger and spiritual hunger.

If your hunger is physical, the satiety center in your brain, which controls your appetite for food, will eventually tell your body that you've had enough. Consider that you have a satiety center in your spirit. As long as your spiritual satiety center does not detect the presence of what your spirit needs, it will continue to send a hunger signal. If you try to satisfy that spiritual craving by eating "natural" food instead of spiritual food, you will never be able to eat enough.

When emotions prompt someone to eat, it may help them to meditate on these scriptures:

Matthew 5:6
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.

John 6:35
And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst."
