June goals

I got out for a good bike ride today and had a good day of eating. Lots of beautiful flowers on our bike trail and more bikers than usual. For June I plan to focus more on nutrition and stretching/strengthening and spend a reasonable amount of time running and biking. My primary objective for eating is to not to eat after dinner. Shooting for 20 workout hours in June, trying not to overdo it. I have a history of "doing too much" and then compensating with eating. m

A Spark

I am wrapping up Chiropractic care for my hip and thinking about fitness. Coach contacted me, which provided a spark, so I am planning on easing back into working out. Fitness group at church remains a consistent weekly resource for me, as I am the leader. Mark

A Fresh Start at "Square One"

After five months and numerous attempts to restart fitness on my terms, I have realized that I am still experiencing an IT Band problem, so after prayerful consideration I am starting over. So rather than running, cycling, and weight training, I am focusing on healthy eating and stretching...and seeing a Chiropractor who has diagnosed hip misalignment. I am optimistic that this restart will build on my past successes and build a better foundation in fitness and faith.

Negative splits

Negative splits occur when the runner runs faster at the end of the race than in the beginning. Hopefully, with my weak start to the "Fit to Serve Challenge", I will finish strong. I am still languishing and wallowing in the rut of sinful eating and lethargy, after almost three years (some small ruts along the way...) of progress. What's kept me going is my faith that I am simply being tested, and that faith will triumph. I am curious about what the Lord has in store for me. mark

A new intermediate term goal

I got out for two runs, a great ski with a friend, and a workout at the fitness center this week. To help me focus on my workouts over the next two months, I am planning on a half marathon/ road trip in early May. Ride a Harley to Prairie du Chien, Quad cities, Springfield (Lincoln Museum), Champaign, and Rockford...visit friends and family. Faith in Fitness group at church going well with several new members...still sampling widely different fitness regimens (from Coach Powers to yoga to dare I admit, Richard Simmons)...having fun and involving the Lord in our fitness. Had a great ski with a friend yesterday and a good discussion of suffering, discomfort, and body image...and how the Lord wants us to be fit! Perhaps the Lord will help me liberate the greyhound inside my clydesdale body. Mark

"who dat kickin' my butt?"

I‘ve had some trouble getting back into fitness after skiing a marathon two weeks ago…in fact I’m in a bona fide rut, eating brownies, renewing my coffee addiction, and adding some weight (not the lifting kind, the belly kind). After going through my usual pleasure sequence (TV, eating, and sleeping…), I am really lost…so I asked the Lord to help me get back on track. As the morning progressed I felt pressure (health fears and regrets…) which got me out the door on a nice run. Reminds me of coaches who found many ways to motivate me, but this time the spark to get out of the rut came from the Spirit within me!

Shake out the dust and start again

Mark is such a cool head - I love his honesty. But again, the key to success in biblical fitness is coming to the realization that it's not about us. We don't have to compete in this or plan for that to keep us motivated. The bottom line is that if we don't feel like eating right and getting those daily workouts in - too bad! As believers, it's not our choice. Jesus paid for our freedom and now we're enslaved to him - so, let's not look to quick fixes and the next goal to get us and keep us going. Let's stay fit for his honor and glory, period. We have to enjoy physical fitness just for the sake of physical fitness.

coach

God as a coach

I found your comment very similar to a book I am reading at the moment. It is called Gameplan for LIfe by Joe Gibbs. I just started it but it talks about God as our head coach in life and the bible as our game plan. I have had many coaches good and bad, some who were amazing and motivated me like your were saying, and others I disliked playing for. But as God as the coach what an inspiration, what a feeling from with in to make him proud of his student.
